At the July 8, 2019 meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Bill and Cathy Greene were selected to be inducted to the Ellington Wall of Honor. Nominated by Patti Wendell, and approved unanimously by the Board of Selectmen, the application included references by many who were impacted by the exceptional service Bill and Cathy provided to the Ellington community.
Starting in 1996, Bill & Cathy Greene were the coordinators for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. For over 20 years, Bill and Cathy provided food, toiletries and paper goods for 25-30 families each week. The success of the Food Pantry came from their ability to include the community in their efforts. Churches, schools and scouting organizations held food drives to keep the pantry stocked. They were also able to secure volunteers to help sort, stack and distribute food.
First Selectman Lori Spielman said “I was overwhelmed and pleased to be there each December when the students of Crystal Lake School would bring in their spare change to donate to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. It showed genuine caring and empathy on the part of the kids and it was clear that Bill and Cathy were very appreciative that the Crystal Lake Food Pantry was chosen as recipients of this annual fundraiser.”
Specialty Printing hosted several golf tournaments that raised money for the Food Pantry. In turn, over the years, Bill and Cathy donated that money to the Community United Methodist Church, where the Food Pantry is located, to purchase a new generator, new freezers and shelving.
Bill and Cathy dedicated many hours of their time to ensure that people of Ellington and Stafford did not go hungry.
A formal induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at the site of the Wall of Honor, located in Arbor Park [off of Main Street]. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
