It is the duty of the Department of Public Works to maintain, repair, clean and remove snow from all public town streets; maintain and operate storm sewers and other drains; care for and maintain all town buildings other than those under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education; prepare or supervise the preparation of plans and specifications for the construction or reconstruction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm sewers, drains, public buildings and other structures and construct or supervise the construction of the same; care for parks, grassed areas in streets and public grounds, including athletic fields under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education and the Parks and Recreation Commission; plant and care for trees within the street line; maintain the facilities and grounds which come under the jurisdiction of the Water Pollution Control Facility. The department is also responsible for the Town's garbage and recycling program.

Trash Collection: Town of Ellington Solid Waste Ordinance. Trash and recycling is collected in Town each day. If you are not sure of your pick-up day, please call our office at 860-870-3140. Trash must be put out by 6:00 AM on your pick-up day. Click here for details on our Automated Trash Collection Program.
Recycling: Ellington uses single-stream recycling collection carts. Residents can place all of their paper and mixed containers into the large blue cart. Recycling will be collected every other week. Click here for more information.
Bulky Waste: Bulky trash will only be picked up if called in four days in advance of your regular pickup day to All American Waste at 860-289-7850. Click here for details.
Brush and Leaves Drop Off Area: Click here to view the Hours of Operation. The Hoffman Road Brush Drop off area will open on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 for the season.
Bagged Leaf Collection: The Town Leaf Collection is scheduled for the week of November 25, 2013. Leaves must be put in paper leaf bags and placed at the curbside or may be brought to the Hoffman Road Brush Drop Off Area.
Household Hazardous Waste: Household Hazardous Waste Day took place on October 27, 2012 for the last time. The Town has contracted with MidNEROC for Household Hazardous Waste disposal beginning in 2013. Click here for details.
Christmas Tree Pick up: Trees are picked up during the first two weeks of January. Trees need to be put at the curb or may be brought to the Town Garage. Call the office for details 860-870-3140.
Mailbox Policy: Mailboxes should be inspected before the ground freezes so that any rotten or damaged posts can be repaired. Please check to see that your mailbox is securely fastened to the post. The Public Works Department is not responsible for any mailbox knocked down from the weight of the snow hitting it. The post to the mailbox should be 3 1/2 to 4 feet back from the curb and the face of the box 12" from the curb.
