Trash Collection
Town of Ellington Solid Waste Ordinance. Trash and recycling is collected in Town each day. If you are not sure of your pick up day, please call our office at 860-870-3140. Trash must be put out by 6 am on your pick up day.
Holiday Schedule: Trash will be delayed one day for the holidays listed below. If the holiday is on a Friday, trash will be picked up on Saturday. If the holiday falls on the weekend, there is NO delay in pickup.

The Trash Collection Fee is $95 per year and is due in full in November; bill will be mailed in October.

Automated Trash Collection: Automated trash collection is where a truck with a mechanical arm operated by the driver empties the containers, known as rolling carts, into the truck instead of workers lifting the barrels. The driver never leaves the truck.
All American Waste, LLC provides each resident household with a new grey-colored 96-gallon rolling cart for trash. The cart shall remain the property of the contractor and they will be responsible for maintenance. Each rolling cart is coded specifically to each Ellington household address. The 96-gallon rolling carts are designed to handle the amount of 3 normal-size trash cans or 6 bags of trash. Most studies show that the average family that recycles requires only one 96-gallon rolling cart for weekly trash collection service. Residents may also elect to purchase a second rolling cart. The cost for an additional rolling cart is $60. If you need an additional 96-gallon cart, please call the Public Works Dept at 860-870-3140 and we will arrange for payment and delivery.
Each residential customer must place the rolling cart and recycling bin at the edge of their property (lawn or sidewalk) no more than 18" from the curb or roadside. Trucks will come by in the morning to dump the rolling cart into the truck. Recycling truck drivers will still manually collect recycling bins. Do not place the rolling carts in front of a car, telephone pole, or behind a mailbox. The truck will need direct access to the cart in order for the system to work. The green recycling bin is to be placed next to the grey rolling cart. Please place the containers out prior to 6:00 a.m. on collection day or the night before.
Only regular bagged household trash should be placed inside the rolling cart. No construction debris or hazardous waste should be placed inside the rolling cart. Trucks are only equipped to collect what is INSIDE the rolling cart. No trash should be placed outside of the rolling cart.
Bulky Waste: Bulky trash will only be picked up if called in four (4) days in advance of your regular pickup day to All American Waste at 860-289-7850. Bulky items include furniture, appliances, bathroom fixtures, tires, rims and just about anything that is not household trash. Demolition and construction debris will not be picked up through the bulky waste program. Scrap wood and carpeting should be bundled for pick up and no longer than 4 ft in length. There is a two cubic yard limit per week. No yard waste will be picked up at the curb.
