News from the Tax Collector's Office
On June 26, 2020, the 2019 Grand List tax bills for Real Estate, Personal Property and Motor Vehicle will be mailed.
Tax bills for Real Estate and Personal Property greater than $600 are due in two installments: July 1, 2020 and January 1, 2021. All Motor Vehicle tax bills will be due July 1, 2020. The Town of Ellington does not re-mail bills for the second Real Estate and Personal Property tax installment. Please retain your original bill for the second installment.
On April 13, 2020, the Ellington Board of Selectmen adopted a resolution to offer the Tax Deferment Program to its taxpayers.
The effect of this program is the equivalent of an extended grace period. The due date of the tax bill is still July 1, 2020; however, instead of the last day to pay being August 3, 2020, the last day to pay will be extended to October 1, 2020. Payment must be received no later than October 1st, or interest will be charged at the statutory rate of 1.5% per month retroactive to July 1, 2020 (6%).
In order for landlords who do not escrow their taxes (or any taxpayer that rents or leases property to tenants or lessees) to be eligible for the Deferment Program, they must provide the Tax Collector with documentation that either the parcel has or will suffer significant income decline, or that commensurate forbearance has been offered to their tenants or lessees. Applications must be received no later than July 1, 2020.
Escrow agents are still required to remit tax payments on behalf of their customers according to the regular timetable, that is, by August 3rd.
The Tax office will be open for business with regular hours starting on Monday, July 6, 2020. We will provide services and process tax payments while adhering to physical and social distancing directives.
Cash payments will not be accepted. The Tax office will accept check, money order or cashier checks.
There are many options for making payments:
- Pay by mail using the courtesy envelope included with your tax bill(s)
- Pay online at www.ellington-ct.gov. ACH payments (electronic checks) cost $0.95 per transaction; the credit and debit card payment fee will be 2.95%
- Our drop box is located in front of the Town Hall
